‘Little Tree’

Black-and-white oil painting of a tree-shaped car air freshener hanging above a nighttime highway viewed from inside a car.

“Little Tree” isolates one of the most familiar objects of the American road: a tree-shaped air freshener suspended over a nighttime highway. Rendered in stark black and white, the disposable object becomes a talisman, hovering between the windshield and the horizon as headlights dissolve into painted marks.

The first work in “Iconic Shit We Overlook,” the painting considers the objects that become part of our visual memory precisely because we have stopped noticing them. Neither precious nor designed to last, the little tree has followed countless commutes, departures, late drives, and new beginnings. Here, the overlooked becomes monumental.
