‘Negative Grace’

Black and white oil painting of a dark swan and its reflection moving through pale water, titled Negative Grace by Camila Hojas.

Negative Grace holds two swans inside one image. As painted, a black swan moves through pale water. Invert the tonal values and the classical white swan appears against darkness. The work uses the visual logic of a photographic negative to unsettle a familiar symbol of purity, elegance, and beauty. Neither reading is more true than the other.

Each is created by the conditions through which it is seen. In this reversal, grace becomes less a fixed quality than an act of perception. Beauty survives the inversion, but meaning shifts, asking what else we call natural or strange simply because we have learned to see it that way.
